• Health and illness are social constructions and in modern societies sociology of health has important contributions to provide: health inequalities persist; the role of psycho-social aspects in the production and preservation of health is more and more acknowledged; the health care system is evolving, especially because of cost and financing problems.

• Sociology of health is an important field in terms of workforce in Switzerland, as in many Western countries. However it is mostly oriented towards application, i.e. the discipline plays an important role in social and preventive medicine, but there is still a lack of institutional basis in sociology departments in Switzerland. The committee aims at establishing the discipline in sociological academia.

• The committee provides an identity to sociologists working in the field (often in interdisciplinary teams) and allows them to be part of a national professional body, for research purposes, but also for teaching students in sociology and health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, public health experts ...)

• The committee also has a role to play in political processes by being involved in health policy formulation.
